What it is
Emsella is an FDA-cleared chair that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to deliver approximately 11,000 supramaximal pelvic floor contractions in a 28 to 30-minute session. That contraction load is far past what voluntary Kegels can produce. The patient sits, fully clothed, while the chair does the work.
Who it’s for
Patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. The cluster we see most often:
- Stress urinary incontinence: leakage with coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting, or impact exercise.
- Urge incontinence: sudden, hard-to-control urges that don’t make it to the bathroom.
- Postpartum pelvic floor weakness that hasn’t resolved with PT or home Kegels.
- Age and menopause-related weakness, often paired with tissue changes from declining estrogen.
- Sexual function concerns: in women, orgasm and lubrication issues tied to pelvic floor tone; in men, erectile and continence issues.
It works for both men and women. Pelvic floor dysfunction is not a women’s-only condition, and the chair doesn’t care which body is in it.
Protocol and pacing
The standard series is six sessions, scheduled one to two times per week. You feel rhythmic contractions through the seat (think strong, deep Kegels firing on their own). No downtime. Many patients work, drive, and exercise the same day.
What results look like
Most patients begin noticing reduction in leakage and improved urgency control within the first few sessions, with continued gain through the series. Peak benefit typically lands around 90 days after the final session as the muscle adaptation consolidates. A maintenance session every six to twelve months keeps the gain.
Pricing
- Single session: $225
- Six-session package (most popular): $1,200
- Eight-session package: $1,600
The O-shot for women
PRP applied via the same regenerative-medicine logic we use for joints, in this case for libido and orgasm support. Often a useful adjunct to Emsella and to hormone optimization. Ask about it at your Emsella consult.
Where Emsella fits with other care
Emsella complements pelvic floor physical therapy well. PT teaches you the motor control; Emsella builds the muscle that the motor control commands. For postmenopausal patients, pairing Emsella with vaginal estrogen restoration through BHRT usually outperforms either alone, because the tissue and the muscle layer are both back in their working range.
Safety notes
Not appropriate for patients with implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, neurostimulators), certain metal pelvic implants, copper IUD, or active pregnancy. Consultation confirms candidacy.
