What I treat

I see two kinds of patients most often. The first is a woman in her forties or fifties whose primary care doctor has told her, more than once, that her labs are within range and offered her an SSRI, a sleep aid, or weight-loss advice. She still isn’t sleeping, her cycle isn’t making sense, and she’s tired of being told that what she’s feeling isn’t something measurable. The second is a man in his late thirties through fifties who has read enough about testosterone and metabolic health to want a doctor who will actually run a free T, an estradiol, an SHBG, and a fasting insulin, and treat what those numbers say.

The work I do for both groups is the same in spirit: I run the comprehensive panel, I read it carefully, and I treat at physiologic doses, with adjustments tied to what the next panel shows.

How I trained

I earned my doctorate from the National University of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland in 2014. My clinical training centered on cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine and on women’s medicine. After graduating I spent four years in a primary care clinic where I performed minor surgeries and learned regenerative therapies: neural therapy, prolotherapy, ozone, and platelet-rich plasma for chronic pain and sports injuries.

I then completed a year-long mentorship with Dr. Tyna Moore in musculoskeletal diagnosis and injection techniques, and from there spent close to four years going deep into hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. That sequence (cardiopulmonary, women’s medicine, regenerative injections, hormones) is the foundation of how I think about a new patient’s panel today.

How I think about hormones

Optimizing hormones, alongside a real diet and consistent movement, is the foundation of healing and disease prevention. Hormones touch immune function, bone and joint health, cardiovascular and brain function, and gut health. When they’re depleted, the failure cascade is wide. When they’re restored thoughtfully, the recovery is often broader than what the patient came in asking about.

I don’t replace hormones aggressively. I aim for physiologic, the level a healthy version of you would be running, and I adjust based on what your follow-up labs and symptoms show. Movement is non-negotiable in the conversation, because movement is the single largest factor in healthy aging.

How I work with patients

The first visit is an hour. I have already read your intake form. We talk through your history and your symptom timeline. The blood draw covers what insurance won’t. You leave knowing what we’re testing and why.

One to two weeks later we sit down with the panels printed in front of us. I show you what they say. We make a treatment plan you understand and that you can articulate to your spouse, your trainer, and your other doctor. If something on the panel needs a specialist I don’t serve as, I refer.

A note from Dr. Pendell

“If you’ve been told your labs are normal for ten years and you still don’t feel like yourself, that’s the visit I want to have with you.”
